OneDrive for Business | Limitations

OneDrive for Business, Microsoft

OneDrive for Business has several limitations. For example, in the filename. Or with the prefix “_” in the filename.  Bill Baer, Senior Product Marketing Manager by Microsoft, has published on TechNet an article about several problems with filenames. Most of them has her origin on SharePoint Server. But not at all:

Problem description
Location on SD card if you have a SD card on your device, you cannot use this card to take this as a location for OneDrive for Business data.
Roaming Profiles For OneDrive for Business it is not possible to use it with roaming profiles.
network drives You cannot use OneDrive for business on a network drive. Therefore, and this is a great custom wish, you cannot give OneDrive for business with a fixed drive letter.
You will find several instructions on the internet, how to do that. Sometimes they will work, Sometimes not. Or not anymore.
That’s a a question about many parameters, like OS and so on.

With these restrictions it is not possible, f.e to use it on a campus with several fixed machines, to use OneDrive for Business with local synced data. If you have such an environment, you should disable OneDrive for Business with OAT before deployment, or If you have still deployed, restrict the usage with GPO (group policies).

But this will always work: Use the web-Browser to connect to your SharePoint Server 2013 (on prem) or SharePoint Online (Office 365). Then you may able to work with Office Online on your documents. And you may do Co-Authoring. And that not only with you personal data in OneDrive for business, fka Mysite. Also on all documents in team sites, where you may have access. If you may not able to work with Office Online on a specified document, you may download this document to your device. But not a complete local synchronization of all documents at all.

Admins should enable access to these documents from “outside”, then users may access these data on her own devices, and here they may synchronize all data on these devices for offline usage. And that not only with windows devices…

OneDrive for Business, Microsoft

Last week, I received this error message form a customer:

error message in Microsoft Office Upload Center

the customers problem was, that he cannot click on the repair-function in the Microsoft Office Upload Center. The question was, which OS he is running and whether he runs also the consumer product OneDrive:

He told me:

  • OS was Windows 8.1, all patches are installed
  • He uses OneDrive for Business on SharePoint Online (Office 365)
  • He also uses OneDrive
You must know, that the Microsoft Office Upload Center is responsible for several things, not only for OneDrive for Business, also for OneDrive:

the Microsoft Office Upload Center, playing together with the internal database for OneDrive and OneDrive for Business

The Microsoft Office Upload Center works also with an internal access database and this database includes OneDrive for Business and also OneDrive.. You cannot repair or clear the cache, if other processes are still running.

The following steps have to be made, to clear the cache:

End the process for OneDrive for Business

  • Search for the blue cloud icon in the SysTray.
  • the blue icon represents OneDrive for Business.
  • Right click and end the Sync-Process for OneDrive for Business.

Stop the Sync-Process for OneDrive

  • Open the windows Explorer and identify the OneDrive Symbol.
  • You will find the Consumer version OneDrive  directly under favorites.
  • Right click on OneDrive and stop the Sync-Process.
  • Wait until the blue OneDrive symbol shows a yellow exclamation mark.

Clear the cache in the Microsoft Office Upload Center

  • Search in the systray for the Microsoft Office Upload Center.
  • The Office Upload  Center symbol is a red circle with an up arrow.
  • Right click on the symbol to open the Microsoft Office Upload Center.
  • Click in Settings
  • Click on “empty the cache”
  • End program Microsoft Office Upload Center

Restart and automatically starts the services

  • Reboot you PC
  • the previously stopped services will automatically started.
  • The Synchronization process for OneDrive will continue.
  • The Synchronization process for OneDrive for Business will continue.

"Repair" added to OneDrive for Business

OneDrive for Business, 15.0.4605.1000, Version With the release of the April Product update, build 4605, the OneDrive for Business “Repair” option is now available. Repair will provide the user an option to fix a certain set of client side sync issues thereby increasing user confidence and, enhancing the usability of the OneDrive sync client. This is a first big step in enabling impacted users to get to a good sync state
Repair option in Onedrive for Business, systray context menu The Repair option is available as part of the systray context menu. If you find you are currently in a permanent sync error state, please use Repair.

Things to keep in mind:

1. Repair will stop sync on all your libraries and then re-sync them. How long this takes depends on the number of files and folders you’re syncing.

2. All your files will be archived by default, hence there is a pre-requisite on required disk space.

3. There can be a delay after Repair is complete, for files to appear in your synced folders. This time will vary (take longer), depending on the number of document libraries you have synced.

4. Don’t time a machine-restart while Repair is in progress, as the program currently don’t have support for auto-restart of Repair.

5. Document libraries deleted on the server, will continue to be in error state post Repair.

SkyDrive vs SkyDrive Pro
